Why We Don't Start With a Retainer

Why a content agency retainer up front misaligns incentives, and why we start with a 3-4 month engagement instead. See our model.

We don't start clients on a retainer. A retainer is transactional — it fixes attention on deliverables, not results, so both sides quietly agree to count posts instead of chasing outcomes. Instead we run a defined 3 to 4 month engagement aimed at a complete transformation, and only agree a long-term retainer once results are proven.

What a retainer actually optimizes for

A retainer sounds safe. Fixed monthly fee, fixed monthly output, no surprises. But look at what it's actually measuring: "this is what you pay, this is what you get."

That sentence sounds fair. It isn't neutral — it quietly turns the conversation into a deliverables count. Four videos this month, eight posts, one strategy call. Did we hit the number? Good, invoice paid, see you next month.

Nobody in that conversation is asking whether the content is building anything. Whether the audience is growing, whether trust is compounding, whether leads are showing up. The retainer doesn't ask those questions because it isn't built to answer them. It's built to confirm that work happened, not that work worked.

That's the misalignment. An agency paid for output has no reason to obsess over outcome. Deliverables get made either way. The incentive to actually move your business is optional — nice to have, not required to get paid.

Why we work from outcomes instead

We look at your business from an outcome perspective. The mission isn't "post content," it's a complete transformation — how you're perceived, who's finding you, what they do once they find you.

That's a different kind of engagement than a deliverables contract, and it changes who's carrying the risk. When the goal is deliverables, the risk sits with the client — you're paying regardless of whether it moves anything. When the goal is a transformation, the pressure sits with us to prove it works before either of us commits to something ongoing.

That's also why we don't write scripts for authority content, and why the three content pillars — reach, authority, conversion — all have to be working together before we call something done. A single viral video isn't a transformation. A content system is.

Why 3 to 4 months, not less

Three to four months is the honest minimum, not a sales number. Here's what actually has to happen inside that window.

We build the foundation first — your visual identity and your positioning, the two things most agencies skip entirely. That takes real time to get right, because it's what everything else gets built on. Rush it and every piece of content after it inherits the mistake.

Then content has to run across all three pillars long enough to show a pattern. Reach content needs enough volume to find what resonates. Authority content needs repetition before it earns trust — nobody decides you're the go-to option in your space off one video. Conversion content needs an audience that already knows and trusts you before testimonials and case studies have anyone to convert.

Compress that into four weeks and you get a highlight reel, not evidence. Some clients see results faster — Leena Parwani closed a multi-million-dirham deal off her sixth video, and Dr. Dina had ten new patients after her first month posting. But those are outcomes that showed up during the engagement, not the finish line for judging whether the model works. The 3 to 4 month window is what it takes to know, not hope.

What working with us costs, and why we say it up front

Working with The Clips Agency starts at AED 50,000, and it goes up depending on the programme that fits your situation.

We tell you that before the call, not on it, because it respects your time. There's no version of this where you spend thirty minutes talking about your business, your goals, and the clients you want to attract, only to find out on slide four that the number doesn't work for you. Neither of us needs that conversation.

Saying the number up front means whoever gets on the call with us is already aligned on budget. Nobody arrives to sell, nobody arrives to be sold to — the call is for the actual questions: where you are now, where you want to go, and whether we're the right vehicle to get you there.

If this isn't the right level of investment right now, that's a legitimate answer. It doesn't make you a bad fit forever, it just means now isn't the moment — and it's better to know that before either of us spends an hour finding out.

Why the retainer comes after, not instead

Once the engagement has run its course and results are proven, that's when a long-term retainer makes sense — for both sides. At that point it isn't a bet. You've seen what the content does, we've seen what your business needs on an ongoing basis, and the retainer reflects an actual working relationship instead of a hope.

That's the whole logic of the order. Prove the transformation first. Agree to keep going second. Not the other way around.

FAQ

Why don't you offer a retainer from day one?

Because a retainer measures deliverables, not outcomes, and deliverables can get made without moving your business at all. We'd rather prove the transformation works over a defined 3 to 4 month engagement, then agree a retainer once both sides have evidence it's worth continuing.

How much does it cost to work with The Clips Agency?

Working with us starts at AED 50,000 and goes up depending on the programme that fits your situation. We say the number before the call so nobody spends time on a conversation that was never going to align on budget.

What happens if 3 to 4 months isn't enough time to see results?

That window covers building your foundation — visual identity and positioning — plus enough content across all three pillars to show a real pattern, not a lucky post. Some clients see results inside that window; the point of the engagement is to have honest evidence either way before anyone commits further.

What if I'm not ready to invest at this level right now?

That's a legitimate answer. Knowing the number up front means you can make that call before either of us spends an hour on it, not after.

If you want to know whether this is the right investment for where your business is right now, book a call with The Clips Agency — you'll show up already knowing the number, so the call can be about the work.
